Dining Room Hutch Chalk Paint Makeover

August 24, 2015 by Andrea 10 Comments

Hey, welcome back!

A few months ago, I was shopping at Walmart with my girls and I stumbled upon chalk paint.  Did you know Walmart sells chalk paint?  The chalk paint by Waverly was located in the craft isle not the home improvement isles.

Who knew?

I usually pick up my supplies from Home Depot not Walmart.  So, I wouldn’t say I’m really familiar with the supplies available at Walmart.

I was pleasantly surprised.

There was only a few colors available, but the available colors were quite cute.

I decided to give them a try.  I settled on Waverly Lacquer Chalk Paint.

hutch upcycle

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, my hutch is the catch all.  Everything, I mean everything ends up there.

To solve the probelm, I created a new cookbook storage area and moved everything that didn’t belong there to their rightful locations.  You can read about the cookbook storage crates here.

First, I painted the hutch using Waverly Chalk Paint.  The hutch really looks pink in the picture but trust me it wasn’t.  I would call it more of a cranberry then pink.

It covered fairly well.  I wasn’t really in love with the color at this point but I wasn’t finished either.

hutch polycrylic latex paint

I grabbed the polycrylic and poured a small amout in a jar.   I then added a small dab of black latex craft paint. I added the black paint to tone down the cranberry.

The paint mixed with the polycrylic but not completely.

As I applied the black polycrylic to the hutch, it darkened to a nicer color.  A color I can live with.

I love the shadowing from the black paint.  It was a quick fix and it worked without running back to the store to pick up wax.

I’m loving the new look. What do you think?

While everything was torn apart and pulled out, I painted the top of the wall dark grey.

Did you notice the change?

It seemed like the perfect time to paint the kitchen, right!

More kitchen makeovers to come, so stay tuned.

Thanks for stopping by.

I heard that Wal-Mart had chalk paint, but I haven’t tried it yet. The hutch turned out so cute and I love the color against the new wall paint! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
