Free blog backgrounds, buttons, templates and banners are available online for the grabbing. I’ve used backgrounds and templates from the four blogs above over the last few years. They’re free, easy to install and fashionable. Whatever style you’re looking for you’ll find it.
Another thing to keep in mind when looking for a template or design is who’s offering it. While tweaking the design of my blog I tried a really cool template. I thought I hit the jackpot. It had everything I wanted. I installed the template and started linking things up. The template had an awesome slider and lots of widgets. I started linking things up and saved as I linked. I was almost finished linking everything up when BAM, their site failed. All that work down the drain. All of my photos, links and widgets were on the left side of my screen all in a bunch. I was devastated! Luckily, I backed up my blog before I started making it easy to return to the template I had before.

For the beginner blogger, I suggest something simple and easy to use if you want to adventure beyond Blogger Templates. When using templates from the above sources you may or may not be able to use the Template Designer available by Blogger. The Template Designer makes it really simple to change the features, colors, text and widgets. When you try on a new blog design some or all of the features will not be available. So if you’re like me, who fiddles with things, you may have to change some HTML codes.
Don’t be afraid to try different templates. Back up your template before trying a new design so you’ll have a starting point to return to in case it doesn’t work out they way you wanted it to. I keep an up to date copy of my blog just in case I need it.
Don’t forget to backup your blog! You’ll be glad you did.
