From one DIYer to another, I’m sharing a story with you today to bring awareness to a silent killer, Mesothelioma.
I was recently contacted by Heather Von St. James with an amazing story of courage, hope, and determination.
As Heather and her husband built careers and started a family, she was diagnosed with Mesothelioma.
Their lives quickly changed from building their dreams to beating the odds.
Heather shares with us her journey from diagnosis to survivorship which can be found at Beating the Odds.
It’s a heart-wrenching read but at the same time inspiring.
If you’re into home DIY projects like myself, this is a scary possibility.
Did you know…
Scary isn’t it. It really makes one think while ripping and knocking out walls. It’s something to be aware of, that’s for sure.
Every year Heather and family, celebrate Lung Leavin Day on February 2.
Lung Leavin’ Day is about overcoming your fears. I get together with my family & friends, and we write our fears on plates and then smash them in a fire.
Lung Leavin’ Day grows bigger every year, and we now use it as a fundraiser for mesothelioma awareness. To date, over $18,000 has been raised.
Would you like to throw your fears into the fire? Join Heather and family by visiting the Lung Leavin Day 2016 page and do just that. It’s a cute interactive page to share with your friends and family.

Stay safe, my DIYers!

Andrea, thanks for sharing this important information @Vintage Charm.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information. My husband and I have remodeled a couple of older houses. We need to keep this in mind.
Please be careful! I didn’t realize how the magnitude of the problem till I read Heather’s story.
Wow, I cannot believe those statistics! I find it shocking that THAT much asbestos is still so present! Bravo for Heather, and everyone getting to celebrate with a beautiful smashed plate. Thank you for sharing this awareness at Merry Monday.
