You probably don’t think that you need to worry about protecting your home from the weather right now because the winter is over and the summer is on the way. But the thing is, now is the best time to do it because you can’t do some of the jobs during the winter when it’s wet and if you do it now, you’re prepared ahead of time. These are some of the best ways that you can protect your home from the harsh weather.
Repaint The Exterior
The exterior paint isn’t just for aesthetics, it plays an important role in protecting the brickwork on the house so it doesn’t get worn down by the weather. You can’t really paint it in the winter when the weather is wet so now it’s warming up, you should take the opportunity to repaint the house. It can be a bit of a big job so if you don’t want to take it on yourself, you can just get a handyman to do it for you. It won’t be that expensive and as long as you get some good quality paint, you shouldn’t need to do it again for a long while.
Fix The Windows
If you have damage to the window frames or you’ve got chips and cracks in the panes, you’re going to get a lot of problems when the weather is bad and the windows could break completely. It’s important that you fix any of this damage to the windows now while the weather is good because it’ll be a lot harder when the winter rolls around again. If the damage is particularly bad, it might be best to just replace the windows completely.
Service The Boiler
Your heating systems aren’t going to get as much use over the summer months and when they sit for months on end without being used, they can start to fail. If you switch the heating on when winter comes around, there’s a chance that it might not work so you need to make sure that you service the boiler during the summer. It’s also a good idea to put the heating on for short bursts every now and again so the pipes stay active.
Clean The Gutters
In the winter when it’s raining, all of that water will sit in your gutters if you don’t clean them out properly. When left for too long, it will start to seep into the house and you’ll start getting leaks and problems with damp throughout the house. When that happens, it’s going to be expensive to fix the problem. But you can avoid all of that if you just clean the gutters out regularly. It’s not a job that people like doing that much but it isn’t hard to do and it will save you a lot of time and money in the future.
If you start doing all of these preparations in the summer while the weather is good, you’ll be well prepared for next year when the winter rolls around again.
