Being well-dressed is no longer just a matter of style and personal preference. For a lot of things in life, it’s a requirement, like in job interviews or dating. But if fashion is not something that you had an interest in before and now you’ve found yourself in need of a style change, it can feel like the only thing you can do is throw money at your wardrobe until you build up a good enough selection. Don’t worry – there are other things you can do – here are a few tips:
Streamline your wardrobe
This is quite an easy one. Many of us hold onto things way past the point of when they were appropriate and when we wore them regularly. If your wardrobe is a mish-mash of all the different stages in your life, you will have more trouble finding a style that suits you. So, once you’ve pinpointed a style that suits you – start removing everything that doesn’t fit in that image. There’s nothing bad about just keeping one style of shirt, pants, and shoes. That doesn’t mean you don’t have “a wide enough style”, it means you know what looks good on you and what suits your lifestyle.
Look for inspiration
Not many men – especially those that aren’t into fashion – follow fashion blogs and fashion gurus. But that’s not an excuse for you not to have a clear view of what you want to dress like. Find people whose style you like and see how you can make it work for you. Perhaps it won’t require buying any new clothes, but just changing the way you wear the things you already have. You’d be amazed by what a difference the way you tuck your shirt in or what button you close can make.
Shoes matter
One of the most important parts of any outfit is the shoes. If you leave them as an afterthought, you might end up messing up your entire outfit. Italian shoes for men are a place where you really want to invest, and all you really need are two good pairs of shoes that will be a match with any outfit: one casual and one dressy. If you live in a warmer area, a casual shoe doesn’t have to be a sneaker. You can go with something like men’s Birkenstocks as a trendy and high-quality option. Dressy shoes, however, must be close-toed and in pristine condition, which means shoe care should be just as much of your fashion routine as putting on underwear.
Wait before you buy
You might see someone with an amazing outfit and think to yourself “I need one of those”. However, you might not really, because seeing it on someone else and liking the look doesn’t translate to you having the opportunities to wear that. Instead, make a list of the things you would buy, and leave it aside. After a while, the things that are written multiple times on the list are the things that you should buy, because they are the things you are most likely to wear.
Dress for the life you want and the life you have
It’s not uncommon to hear the phrase “dress for the job you want, not for the job you have”, but that’s not always great advice, because while you’re trying to achieve the life you want, you still have to live and fit into the life you have. So, try to find a balance between the two and really give your all towards elevating the look that you’ve had so far and bringing it closer to the look that you want. This doesn’t have to cost money, because fashion is much more about the attitude than it is about the clothes.
So whether you are looking to elevate to a new stage in your life or you just feel like your fashion style has to evolve for you to be taken seriously by yourself as much as others, there are always things that you can do that won’t cost you money and that will make you look like a million bucks.
