When we travel overseas, we often get anxious and overwhelmed by all the things we have to plan and think about. From the moment you step into the airport, there are many procedures to go through, so we have made a little guide to make it easier for you.
Documents you need to have
The first and most important thing you can’t go anywhere without is your personal documentation. Your ID and passport are the most relevant, although it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a copy of your passport as well. For certain countries, you will maybe need a visa, so make sure you ask around and get what you need. And double-check your plane ticket. Other documents include health insurance, which is something you shouldn’t travel without. In this documentation section, we are going to mention credit cards and cash as well. And a useful tip is to have the right currency and make sure you have ATMs or banks close by. Keep in mind that for some countries, like South America or Africa, you need to get vaccinated, and have a vaccination chart with you as evidence.
Make the arrangements in advance
In most cases, you have booked accommodation, so you don’t have to worry about that. However, many times, you don’t have transport from the airport to the hotel. Let’s say you travel to Australia – you should check for online car hire at Brisbane airport so that you have a car waiting for you when you get there. It’s easier since you don’t have to carry your luggage around looking for a taxi.
Technology you need
The most useful thing you can bring with you is, of course, your phone. The copy of your passport in electronic form, your money, all the info, and even maps, directions, and Google, after all, are there. Don’t forget your charger, and a power outlet adapter, if you need one. Check the Internet and data roaming options, and maybe even get a power bank with wi-fi, so you don’t have to worry about not being online. For fun, and to make the trip a lot more pleasant, a kindle and headphones are a must.
Who to call in case of an emergency?
You should never worry too much about something bad happening. However, knowing who to contact in case of an emergency can make you feel safe. The embassy of your country is the safest option, so make sure you know where it is, and even get some contact info. But as we mentioned, just in case, have a copy of your passport, and your documentation at hand. For medical emergencies, use the contact from your insurance papers. Also, before leaving, make sure your friends or family know where you are staying, and how to reach you.
Make sure you know the country’s laws and culture
Although today, many countries, especially the popular travel destinations are not that rigorous, it is not a bad idea to get to know their laws, and all the cultural differences, which will help you have a more relaxed experience. The general laws in almost all countries are regarding the use of drugs, drinking alcohol in public places, smoking in public places, and in some even the way you dress. Make sure you know which countries don’t allow certain objects to be carried in the airport, where you can and cannot take photos, and even where you can and cannot show affection in public.
What to pack
Another source of problems can be how and what to pack for your trip. Overseas travel is often long, so being comfortable, and trying to pack light are the most important things. In your carry-on bag, make sure you have a neck pillow, any meds if you need them, your documents, phone, a change of underwear, and clean socks, a sweatshirt in case you get a bit cold, and some reading material or anything else that keeps you entertained. As for your luggage, travel size bottles for your cosmetic products are a must. Try to pack according to the weather conditions, but make sure you pack a few warmer or lighter items, just in case. Pack your socks in shoes, so you save some space, and iron all the clothes, so you can just take them out, plus it will save you some space.
Getting informed and prepared in advance is the best advice for any overseas travel. This way, you will know exactly what you need, and what to pack to be able to have a fantastic stay.
