You want your home to reflect your style and whenever you’re designing or planning, or just looking for new items to go into a room, you should make sure it’s to your taste. With that being said, you do sometimes have to take into account the building, its layout, and its character when making any changes to the style.
It is possible to make both modern and traditional styles work in the same room or home in general, and we have teamed up with bespoke furniture company Robinson of England to give you some tips on how to combine both styles in your home.
Some buildings lend themselves really well to more traditional design styles. In these cases, it’s worth exploring options such as traditional sofas and tables. Chesterfield sofas are traditional British sofas that have long been popular with the upper classes of British society. New designers are bringing their own style to this piece of furniture and with that comes experimentation with new materials and interesting colors. By going for a non-traditional color of fabric on the sofa or even accessorizing it with more modern cushions, you can incorporate a more traditional style of furniture into a modern home.
Dining tables are another excellent example of this. If your home has a dining room, it’s a great space that you should value and get the most out of. Don’t just turn it into another living room, give yourself a place to eat with family and friends and sit together around a table. There are lots of great modern dining tables which will look stunning even in a traditional space. Because they have multiple elements, you can experiment with different combinations of tables and chairs. Also, don’t be afraid to see how a seating bench would look with your dining table.
Benches rather than chairs around the table is an excellent example of using minimalist style to combine modern and traditional furniture. If for example you have a traditional home and you want to bring modern furniture into it, start with less. By having less furniture, you’re creating a minimalist look and also not allowing for there to be obvious contrasts between the old and new which could make it look out of place.
In some situations, you will have to reduce the number of modern influences on specific areas in order to make them blend together. The garden is one such area of the home where making traditional and modern work together can be more of a challenge. Traditional homes often have a garden which includes flower beds and fencing between properties. Modern gardens sometimes have fewer flowers or classic fencing and instead, make use of industrial material such as exposed brick. Decking is one element of garden design that can work well in both modern and traditional homes, often with the material used being the only difference. Modern homes may well use composite decking compared to the real wood used in traditional gardens. Both have their benefits to it comes down to your personal preference and budget when choosing.
We hope the points made in this piece help you combine modern and traditional styles in your home, or at least show you that it’s not impossible or something to be worried about.
