Trying to conceive a baby is quite possibly the most exciting time in a relationship. You love each other so much you want to create something more with your love, and a baby is the usual result of this. There are so many ways that you can prepare your life for a baby, but preparing yourself before you start trying and the stick turns blue is another story.
Fertility is a fragile thing. Some people are exceptionally lucky and can fall pregnant without trying to fall pregnant. With this in mind, let’s look at five things that you can do before you dip a toe into the world of fertility.
- Stop Smoking & Drinking. The fun clearly starts here – no really, it does. You don’t need to smoke and what better reason to stop do you need than for your potential future child? Smoking narrows the blood vessels, which can lead to less blood flow to your uterus. You want to be able to maximize your chances of conception, and without smoking and drinking, you can do just that!
- Start Folic Acid. Folic acid can lessen your chances of having a baby with spinal defects. Folic acid is the supplement you need for supporting a healthy pregnancy. You may not be pregnant just yet, but you will be soon enough and you want to do what you can to improve your chances at the best possible infant health.
- Reduce Coffee. You need caffeine as a parent, but you definitely don’t need as much of it when you’re pregnant. Cut back to 200mg a day (one 12oz cup of coffee). Until we know more about the effect of caffeine on a fetus, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
- See An OBGYN. It’s always a good idea to get an idea of your uterine health, and an appointment with a good OB is going to give you the lowdown you need about it. You can also find the OB you’ll use throughout pregnancy. The right OB will make you feel calm, excited about the future and ready to take on the world of trying to conceive. It’s a big world and the more advice you have, the better.
- Eat Well. You want to have a body that can effectively nourish your baby and if you are eating well, you’re going to improve those chances. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein is going to make a big difference to your health. Take the time to prepare balanced meals, and make sure that you are drinking plenty of water. You want to have a pregnancy that you are energized for, and that starts before you try for a baby.
