As we get older we will feel that we’ve got to take charge of our health with more urgency. When we are on approach to middle-age this is when so many different issues tend to come out of the woodwork. But it’s not just about learning how to be healthy; it’s about understanding what the big issues are as we approach middle-age. What are these?
Gaining Weight
As we lose muscle with every year that passes it makes it more difficult to shed the pounds. And this is when we can start to have an increased chance of heart disease or diabetes. And with the fact that 100 million Americans have diabetes, we can’t really argue with the statistics! If we are gaining weight we’ve got to do something about this. And learning to fight weight gain isn’t just about diet and exercise, it can also be about mindset as well. We have to remember that if we have certain bad habits with regards to our diet this is going to be a lot more difficult to undo as we get older. The best plan of action is to tackle it now.
Mental Health Problems
Approximately 1 in 20 Americans over the age of 60 have depression which can mean that we are statistically getting happier as we get older but if you are someone who does suffer from the blues on occasion as you are approaching middle-age it’s a good idea to start tackling this in a holistic sense. You may feel that there are deep-rooted issues within you that you don’t want to face up to. But this is where something like counseling can work as well as practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Or, it could very well just be a chemical imbalance. This is something that we can greatly underestimate when it comes to depression. Depression, as a chemical imbalance, can be fixed through our diet and our lifestyle.
Bone Weaknesses
From the age of 40, we start to get weaker in our bones. And many people may think that it’s just a part of life that we are going to get brittle bones, but because calcium stores are being extracted to try and strengthen the bones, this is why we end up getting weaker. As a result, osteoporosis or brittle bone disease can follow. But the great thing for you to keep your bones stronger can be about having a vitamin D supplement as well as doing bodyweight exercises that focus on strength. There are so many different approaches to getting your bones stronger that many things can be incorporated as a part of your lifestyle. You should also think about your dietary habits that can deplete your body of essential nutrients like calcium. A couple of examples include smoking and alcohol.
As we get older things tend to come into focus and this is especially true when it comes to illnesses. But with the right mindset and a proactive attitude, we can fix these things.
