Follow the processes mentioned below:
Create a solid base:
Starting with a base, align the bricks in a well-ordered manner. Pour the previously made concrete mixture on the bricks to make it strong. The concrete acts as an adhesive. You can use cement for this process also.
While building the base, you can also leave some space for creating a woodpile underneath. Keep ample space in between the base and woodpile for good airflow. It is also important to create solid walls that can hold maximum temperature while baking or cooking.
Place fire bricks
You can pick up bricks from the near hardware store and if you are residing in an urban neighborhood, you can visit a kiln. After buying the bricks, place them one by one over the base.
Insulate the bottom
You can use multiple items for insulating the bottom of the oven. The insulated bottom ensures the trapping of heat. You can use fiberglass, rocks, and even used alcohol bottles for insulation.
Make a stable oven floor
After choosing the best fitting fire bricks, you have to lay a stable oven floor beneath them. You can use some clay or cement to provide adhesiveness to the bricks.
Apply clay
1:1 sand and clay is the recommended ratio to be used. You can easily get some clay from a nearby builder’s yard. You may need a lot of sand because it will be used later in making dome.
Using the 1:1 mixture, start to fill the gaps. Apply up to 3 layers for good strength.
Make dome and let it dry
Use the remaining sand in preparing the dome. The base of the dome must be round enough to cover the top properly. It shouldn’t allow any heat loss during the cooking process. After placing the dome on the top, apply the remaining mixture on top as well. It gives strength to the dome.
Let the walls and dome of the oven to dry for about 2-3 days. The natural sunlight provides proper drying.
There are certain things that must be followed while building a wood-fired oven made of bricks.
The height, width of the oven must be calculated properly.
The chimney must be placed at the right spot for proper airflow.
You must use the materials that can easily withstand the high temperature of 1300oC.
Follow the mentioned tips and you can have your own backyard oven in no time.
