Consistency is so important to get the proper painting of your work. Too much thick paint cannot fulfill that. It does not flow properly through the paint sprayer. No matter what paint you use, it has to be thinned. Chalk paint is a little bit thick, unlike regular latex paint. But it can be applied easily with a paint sprayer. For chalk paint, you require thinning paint. If your paint is too thick, you can thin it with the water.
To thin your paint you’ll need:
- Paint Sprayer or a bucket
- Paint strainer
- Whisk
- Water
- Viscosity Cup or funnel
- Stopwatch or Timer
Step 1:
Use a fine paint strainer to remove the dried lumps from the paint and pour it into a paint sprayer or a bucket as you preferred. Dried chunks don’t mix with water and can clog the paint sprayer during spraying.
Step 2:
Take water to mix with the paint. Every paint varies in thickness and there is no fixed amount of water to get the perfect thinning paint. You have to adjust to the right amount of water. Add a small amount of water. With the whisk mix it well with paint. Don’t pour too much water at a time. It would make the paint more watery. Gradually keep adding water till you get the right consistency as you expected.
Step 3:
Once you think you get the right thinning consistency, then make a trial before starting final spraying. Dip a viscosity cup into the paint completely, then wait a few moments and bring out the cup. You can also use a funnel instead of a viscosity cup. Get a stopwatch or timer while taking out the cup from the paint. It would take 25-40 seconds to run out the paint’s last drop from the cup’s bottom. Time can vary a few seconds more or less than the common timing. It depends on the amount of your painting consistency. If your timing is between them or a little bit more or less, it’s ok to work with that paint.
Tips:
While pouring water into the paint, make sure you are adding water gradually, not a huge amount of water. But what if you made it so runny accidentally and can’t use it for your painting? At this time, add some more paint to the mixer. Don’t take all the paint at the same time. Otherwise, you can’t solve the problem if you make any mistake. Save some paint for later and to overcome the fault.
