When you have a mental health condition, make sure to treat it seriously rather than overlooking it. Remind yourself that a mental illness is as important as a physical illness. When the people around you get to know that you have a condition such as depression, they tend to treat us differently, which is wrong because all you want is for someone to listen and understand what you have to say.
Being treated differently means you are not one of us, which is not a safe feeling and leaves an individual more confused. If a third party talks about their issue with you, that means they are comfortable with you, which is needed when a person is suffering from a mental health condition.
It’s not always in our head:
Depression or any other mental health condition is not easier to be dealt with but trust me when I tell you I have heard people say that I am overthinking or it is all in my head, and it hurts. The worst part is the more you say it, the more I believe it and then eventually blame myself for feeling this wrong way.
Many need to understand that life has not been easy due to which I have many social fears and anxiety that has happened to me due to a chemical change in my brain. I want to be normal, and if you can’t help, then at least don’t make it worse than it already has been to me.
Don’t try to be helpful and look for instant solutions:
People have often looked at me and have suggested to me many different solutions such as I should exercise more, I should not think about it, see a doctor, sit in the sun, or try to do some yoga.
I know that everyone means well, but what they forget is that I live in the same society as theirs and whatever solution they have to offer me, make sure to consider that I may have tried it. If I share a problem, listen rather than finding solutions.
If we take medication or not is not your business:
There were many instances where I shared the fact that I don’t believe in the fact of taking medications as I want to try natural ways for treating whatever issue is that I am facing. I was laughed in my face and called a traditionalist by many around me.
Furthermore, even if I am taking medication for whatever I am feeling, I am told its side effects on the body. I am always suggesting a different one saying it would help faster and better, which is wrong. When I consume medicine, I have been through all the side effects and have discussed all the consequences I will face with my doctor. My medicine is none of your business.
We are exhausted:
Having a mental condition is exhausting and frustrating, too; I constantly face anxiety and panic attacks. Moreover, I have to mask myself in front of everyone and hide my emotions when I am in a crowd, and all this management must be done despite feeling blue every day.
All of this process is exhausting and leaves one feeling done with the world; it takes a lot of energy to pretend to like and do things that one does not want to do, so all in all, try to at least be grateful that despite being beat, we are always there.
If we cancel plans, don’t be quick to judge:
When one suffers from a mental health condition, understand that socializing is never their strong pursuit. Still, despite that, all of us love the people connected to us. We would do whatever is needed to make them feel happy, including attending social events, participating in parties, and socializing but always remember that socializing takes energy. You don’t always have that, which is why we have to cancel plans.
There are many different triggers for a different being, so always be mindful of all your anxious and depressed friends.
Everyone has different symptoms:
One of the biggest issues with mental health conditions is that not everyone faces the same symptoms, so many people have called me a fraud for feeling what I feel because someone in their family or friends did not feel the same way.
Every person is different from the other one, and my mental health condition can be a consequence of different circumstances from yours, but there are many out there that will call it wrong, drama, or a fraud, which is not okay. If a person feels sad and depressed, try not to compare and assume but understand what they are going through and be helpful as much as you can be to them.
Always be supportive even though you don’t understand:
When an individual feels depressed, the best thing you can do is ask them what you can do for them and when they do tell you to do what they want, make sure not to disappoint no matter how hard the task will be. Facing a mental health condition is not easy, so by trying and listening, you can move mountains for the person who feels this way.
To sum it all up, the person who feels depressed or has anxiety wants to be understood and needs to know that you are there for them on the good and the bad days. If you don’t understand what is happening, make sure to research or talk to a professional doctor that can explain things for you but even then, if you don’t understand, then that is fine; just make sure to be there for them.
