If you’re living in a small space some of the most important things to consider are storage and organization. The great thing about this is that it can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be — from the super simple idea of using baskets or bins to store items out of sight, to building custom niches and shelving units that work with your home’s design.
Here are some simple ways to save space in your home:
Get rid of items that don’t serve any purpose.
Most of us have a ton of stuff in our homes that we don’t need.
Ask yourself this question: If I were to become homeless tomorrow, would I really need any of these things?
If the answer is no, then get rid of them!
Start with a good purge.
Don’t just throw things away willy-nilly — take an inventory first! Make a list of what you have and what you need, then sort through your belongings and decide what can go. (For more ideas about how to do this, read my post on decluttering on the Squab Storage blog.)
You’ll get much better returns by donating items that still work well and are only slightly used — or better yet, by selling them yourself! You can also make money by recycling old electronics like old cell phones or computers through sites like Gazelle and Amazon Trade-In (which also accepts other types of electronics like cameras).
Use vertical storage spaces.

If you have a small apartment or house, make the most of the vertical spaces. The key is to find ways to store items vertically. This will allow you to maximize the space you have and keep things looking neat and tidy. Here are some ideas:
Use vertical cabinets or drawers.
If you have limited closet space, try using some vertical cabinets or drawers to store your clothes instead of hanging them on hangers or folding them into drawers horizontally as most people do with their clothes storage systems. Vertical cabinets and drawers take up less room than traditional horizontal ones do while still providing plenty of storage space for all those items!
Wall Mounted Storage Units
Use a wall-mounted spice rack to organize spices or other small items like buttons and beads. If you have children who love making crafts, this is an excellent space saver for all their little bits and pieces that would otherwise be floating around your house!
Use Vertical Shelves.
If you have a small apartment or house, make the most of the vertical spaces. You can store many things on shelves, from books and DVDs to kitchenware and cleaning supplies. These shelves will take up less space than cabinets or cupboards, so they’re ideal for smaller spaces.
Use a Standing Desk.
If you work from home or have an office at home, consider getting a standing desk instead of a traditional one that sits on the floor. Standing desks create more room in your home because they don’t take up as much floor space as sitting desks do — but they also help support healthy posture and prevent back pain by keeping you on your feet throughout the day instead of sitting down all day long in front of your computer screen!
Hang your items.
Use hooks to hang items like towels instead of storing them in drawers or cabinets where they may get lost or forgotten about!
Take advantage of Self-storage rentals.
Self-storage facilities are great for storing extra items you don’t have room for in your home. But they can also be used to store furniture, appliances and other things that you don’t need on a regular basis.
When you need space in your home, but don’t want to rent an entire storage unit, take advantage of self-storage rentals that offer smaller units. Most self-storage facilities have units ranging from 5×5 to 10×20 feet. These small spaces are perfect for storing seasonal decorations like Christmas trees or Halloween costumes. Many self-storage facilities even offer outdoor parking spaces where you can park your RV or boat if you don’t want it taking up room inside your home.
Get rid of things that don’t belong to you.
You might have noticed that there is a lot of stuff in your home that doesn’t belong to you. That’s because most people are not very good at keeping track of their belongings. They forget that they borrowed something or they simply lose it.
If you do this, you will always have space problems at home because there is too much stuff around. It’s easy to clean up after yourself when you live alone or with just one other person but when there are more people living in the same house, things get complicated quickly.
If you want to save space at home and have more room for other things, get rid of the items that don’t belong to you as soon as possible so that they don’t take up unnecessary space in your home.
Use hooks to hang items like towels instead of storing them in drawers or cabinets where they may get lost or forgotten about!
Multipurpose furniture
If you don’t have a lot of space, you’ve probably thought about getting some multipurpose furniture. That way, you can get the most use out of your limited space.
Adding a multipurpose furniture is a great way to save space at home because it gives you more options for what you can do with a room. Below are some ideas we have:
- If you have a small living room and want to make it into a study area, then consider getting an office desk that folds up when not in use.
- If you have kids who are still too small for bunk beds but need their own space in the bedroom, then consider getting a loft bed that can be used as an extra bed when they’re older.
- If you have an empty corner in your kitchen and want to fill it up with something useful and decorative, then consider getting storage ottomans that double as tables when needed (these can also come with built-in storage compartments).
Stackable Storage
Stackable storage items are the best way to save space in the home. They are stackable, which means that you can easily store them on top of each other, which takes up less space than having them all out on display.
When you want to use them, they come apart and you can use them individually or together. For example, if you need storage for your pots and pans but don’t want them cluttering up the countertop, try getting some stacking pots and pans baskets. These baskets will take up less space than having all of your pots hanging around and also make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for when cooking dinner.
